Us
Our group is called the Wakefield and District Down’s Syndrome Support Group – we were formed in 2000, and are run by volunteer parents/carers of people with Down’s syndrome. We support lots of families in Wakefield, and in the surrounding areas including Barnsley, Dewsbury, and further afield. The aim of the group is to provide a support network, information and fun activities for people with Down’s syndrome, their families and friends. We raise awareness and promote social inclusion in a wide variety of ways.
Our group thrives because of the network of peer support built up between parents. Whatever you need, someone from the group will try to help you. We are always working on new projects to offer more help in more ways, and we can provide information about the local services that provide professional support if needed.
We run loads of activities for our kids – including monthly get-togethers; trips; a club for older kids and young adults; and our special siblings group.
We are very proud of the life-long friendships that develop between our children and young people, and also between siblings and parents as well. We think coming together with others in relaxed environments to have fun in a fully inclusive and totally non-judgemental way is really important – it’s the reason the group was set up in the first place.
